- More money than ever is being put into Christmas festivities at The GuildHall Market
- A social media campaign is being run by Derby College students
- Santa’s Grotto, festive themed selfie trail and “Mrs Clauses Post Office” on offer
These claims have come from head of the Christmas organisation at the Guildhall market, Ajay Singh.
“This year is going to be one of the biggest in the markets history, certainly in terms of money invested into the festive planning, and what we actually want to do and are going to do,” said Mr Singh.
Mr Singh, who co-runs the Derbyshire organisation “Furthest From the Sea“, which is based in the Guildhall market, said: “Obviously, we have one of few Grotto’s in Derby this year, as well as the little post office for the children to post letters to Santa.
“We’ll be having a picture led, almost treasure hunt, ran by the college, so people can see all around the market, and different parts of the town centre.”
Christmas decorations have already gone up at Guildhall Market, Derby.
Mr Singh explained how few of these projects would be possible without the support of his fellow stall owners.
“We’re very, very lucky this year, you know we’ve had some extra funds pumped into this project, but that wouldn’t mean anything without everyone out there coming together to put this thing together,” he said.
News that a Santa’s Grotto will be on offer at the Guildhall comes after it was revealed that the popular Co-op Santa’s Grotto will no longer be held in the city centre.
Stall owner of the “The Mecca”, Debra Henderson said: “With the Co-op not being around anymore, we will probably see a lot of people coming for the grotto, and that will be lovely, really great.”

As well as the grotto, organisers have set up a stall where children can post their letters to Santa, called “Mrs Clauses Grotto”.
Later in December, there will be a tour around the market where children can build their own elf by collecting a different part of the elf from a set number of stalls around the Guildhall.
Students from the college are using the Derby Live Facebook page in order to post about what will be available this Christmas.
Christmas festivities will be underway in the Guildhall Market from Friday, December 2.
